I know I’m in good company when I mention I have an overabundance of unfinished objects (UFOs) or works in progress (WIPs). I tend to start each year with really lofty goals of finishing them all and organizing my entire sewing room, along with losing weight, running marathons, and solving all the world’s problems.
Amazingly enough, I never reach all those goals.
This year, I joined a UFO challenge at Quilting Around the World. Participants list 12 projects they’d really like to get done this year and each month a random number is drawn and we’re given our project to work on. Of course, we can always make substitutions if something has a deadline or if another project is really calling to us.
Since I started a pattern design business last year, my goals this year are primarily focused on designing and creating new quilts. However, I do want to finish up some of my old projects that have just been hanging around for way too long.
My first finish this year is a small mug rug. I started working on it on January 1st and spent four hours foundation paper piecing that sunflower. I won’t mention the number of times my seam ripper came out because I can’t honestly remember. I finished it with some simple meandering loops on my domestic machine and stitched a single fold binding.
I’ve got another UFO that’s almost finished, so I could actually have two finishes for January. I don’t know what I’ll do with myself!
