I say it all the time, but I really think this one might be my favorite pattern I’ve designed. There’s just something about this block that I love. It goes together quickly and offers lots of versatility in layout options. For the first time, I’ve also included multiple quilt size options. This is a a 2 1/2” strip and layer cake friendly quilt. I hope you love it as much as I do.
I made my version with some leftover jelly roll strips in 3 Sisters fabrics for Moda. I used a gray yarn dye by Robert Kaufman for the background and Kona Snow for the contrast. It was my first time sewing with a yarn dye fabric and it won’t be my last.
There was more stretch and fraying than regular quilting cotton, but I pieced everything with my dual feed foot and had minimal problems. I didn’t prewash anything before I started this version and there are no issues with shrinkage after the first trip through the washer and dryer.
Minerva quilted through the different materials beautifully. I didn’t really expect problems, but it was my first time trying this and that always makes me nervous. No stretching, shifting, or pulling while the quilt was on the frame.
Hard Candy includes instructions for three sizes: Baby 52” x 52”, Twin 72” x 92”, and Queen 92” x 102”. I already have the fabric ready to make the version shown on the cover, Bonnie and Camille’s Vintage Holiday.
This pattern is available as a pdf download in my store here. Paper patterns are coming soon and will be sold in quilt shops. Let your favorite quilt shop know if you’d like them to carry my patterns.
I’ll be doing a tutorial in the future showing 3 different methods for making the folded corners that feature prominently in this block – be sure to stop back to check it out!

I like the pattern .. in the baby quilt size. Kind of reminds me of a snowflake.
