I’ve got another recipe up on the Moda Bake Shop here, and I know I’ve said it before, but I absolutely love this quilt!
When I saw the Nova Collection by Basic Grey, I knew I needed to use them in a quilt. The fabrics are so rich and deep, the patterns gorgeous, and there’s a few Grunge fabrics thrown in for good measure. I might be slightly obsessed with Grunge now.
I played in EQ8 to get a pattern design I liked. Side note: is there anyone interested in seeing my process of designing? This quilt block went through a lot of changes before I settled on the final design. Leave me a note and let me know – I’d be happy to share how my design process works.
I played around with a new-to-me technique while making this quilt – using an Easy Angle Ruler to cut my Jelly Roll strips into half square triangles. Usually I do the whole cut a square, draw a line, sew 1/4” on either side of the drawn line, cut apart, trim dog ears, and press method. But for half square triangles that are 2 1/2” I’d need to cut a square that’s 3” if I were to use that method. The Easy Angle Ruler (affiliate link: EZ Quilting Easy Angle Acrylic Template, 6.5-inch
Since not everyone has an Easy Angle Ruler or the desire to own one, I’ve also included instructions in this pattern for cutting rectangles and drawing lines. When I started quilting, this is probably the method I would’ve chosen. I didn’t have a huge budget to buy ever ruler I ever saw, and I like to make do with what I have.
Whichever method you choose, the blocks work up quickly and make a stunning quilt.
As always, I spent more time arranging and rearranging the blocks on my design wall than I did with actually sewing the blocks.
Once I had the quilt top completed, I quilted it with Minerva using my favorite swirly pantograph.
Once this quilt was complete, we took it to my in-law’s house for a photo shoot. It was my mother-in-law’s birthday weekend and they’d gotten some fresh snow just before we arrived. My husband is such a trooper in holding quilts.
My mother-in-law dropped a few hints that the quilt looked just so good with her décor, I decided to let the quilt live with her for a little bit. I made sure to stress that it was not a birthday present – I don’t want to set that precedent! My family is far too big to make a quilt for everyone for every birthday.
Nova by Basic Grey is in stores now. The pattern for this quilt is available on the Moda Bake Shop (for free!)
